Abstract:
Abstract The paper presents the conceptual model of the relationship between cognitive ability of an inspector and the X-ray screening task performance. Applying the existing scales, the subjects’ abilities are measured, including visual search, figure-ground separation, feature extraction, visual imagery, logic think, mental rotation and transformation, association memory, risk attitude and attention. A 2 (time pressure: high vs. low) × 2 (X-ray image difficulty: easy vs. difficult) experiment is conducted. The obtained results reveal that both time pressure and X-ray image difficulty have significant effects on visual search performance. Whatever the levels of time pressure and X-ray image difficulty are, the abilities of feature extraction and mental rotation and transformation significantly affect subjects’ visual search performance. The effect of gender difference on the performance is not significant.
