A chapter in Handbook of Geomathematics, 2015, pp 2855-2881 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The chapter addresses the development mainstreams and research challenges in cartography in a society characterized by mobility, cloud computing, and Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI). Starting from a relation analysis between the real world and its manifold digital worlds and between the official and commercial geodata suppliers, the author indicates the parallelized trend of going global and going local with geosensor networks and location-based services. She stresses the growing significance of VGI and open source platforms as well as their influence on cartographic visualization. Representative research and development results about geodata enrichment, spatiotemporal modeling, and map design are demonstrated. Emerging research demands in the fields of map mash-ups, incremental map generation, and geovisual analytics are identified.
