Chapter Chapter 29 in A Course in In-Memory Data Management, 2014, pp 197-205 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract To be used in productive enterprise applications, databases need to provide durability guarantees (as part of the ACID principle). To provide these guarantees, fault-tolerance and high availability have to be ensured. However, since hardware failures or power outages cannot be avoided or foreseen, measures have to be taken which allow the system to recover from failures.
