Abstract: Abstract We present a theory of implicit methods for 1-D scalar conservation laws. The theory is centered around an implicit monotonicity criterion. We give rigorous theoretical results concerning the range of applicability of implicit schemes. After a brief introduction, we describe the components of the implicit theory.
