Abstract As in many other fields of applied sciences, mathematical and numerical models are about to play an increasing role in biology and medicine. More noticeably, the mathematical and numerical investigation of the blood circulatory system, although energetically pursued since few years only, is destined to represent one of the major mathematical challenges of the next decades.
