Abstract: Abstract In this paper, I narrate the development of Galois field theory in the 19th Century. This includes, of course, the description of the situation Galois met when he introduced his Galois fields. The first applications of Galois field theory in group theory and in the foundations of geometry are also coped with. The narration ends with a few spectacular results in this area obtained in the 20th century.
