Abstract:
Abstract In particular in mathematics and natural sciences, the use of supercomputers has made possible the treatment of formerly completely intractable problems. It also provides the possibility of analyzing complex systems by the aid of simulation. This procedure is now becoming as important as theoretical investigations and closely interacts with the latter. A visionary formulation of the scientific potential arising from an optimal use of the supercomputers at the HLRS can be found in the “Report of the High Performance Computing and Networking (HPCN) Advisory Committee” already published in 1992:
