A chapter in High Performance Computing in Science and Engineering ’02, 2003, pp 439-450 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The increasing computational power and new numerical methods give the possibility for more detailed investigations of complex physical phenomena which are typical in science and engineering. In the first part of this paper, we show how CFD simulations of the flows through packed beds using the lattice Boltzmann approach can be used to get local and detailed information about the physical transport processes. The second part deals with the performance of the lattice Boltzmann method on different hardware platforms. It shows that this modern numerical method also needs adequate computers, i.e. high performance computers, to give best performance.
