Abstract:
Abstract A central problem in the safety analysis of nuclear reactors is the determination of the neutron distribution in the reactor core. We present the neutron multigroup diffusion equations that often are used in this context and discuss the use of hybrid mixed finite elements for their numerical solution. A closely related adaptive concept is presented with numerical test examples showing the potential strength of this adaptive approach. Further, we discuss concepts for time step control in the instationary case and present numerical examples in 2D that support the need for adaptivity in space. Finally, numerical results are shown for a 3-D simulation.
