Abstract: Abstract Acoustic pyrometry is a temperature measuring technique, suitable for obtaining temperatures in large furnaces. Its measurements can be used to calculate temperature distributions in the measuring plane by mathematical reconstruction. This paper describes the conditions in the combustion chamber of a brown coal utility boiler and the measuring techniques used thus far. Exemplary results of temperature measurments by acoustic pyrometry at different operation modes are presented. Using acoustic pyrometry 24 measuring paths are obtained. Along each path the mean temperature in the flue gas can be determined by measuring the propagating time of a sound signal. The reconstruction of a continuous temperature distribution from 24 mean temperatures is a tomographic problem with extremly few data. The tomographic problem was satisfactorily solved with Collocation-Algorithms. Nevertheless, due to the dearth of data only distributions with coarse details could be reconstructed. Attaining additional data by increasing the number of measuring devices is not feasible for both financial and technical reasons. However, the complete time resolved sound signal can be used to compute a more detailed reconstruction by solving an inverse problem for the wave equation. Finally, reconstructions calculated by collocation algorithms and the solutions of the inverse problem of the wave equation are compared.
