Abstract: Zusammenfassung Originale der Werke der griechischen Mathematiker — wie der griechischen Schriftsteller überhaupt — sind nicht erhalten, mit Ausnahme einiger Papyri aus der Zeit um 200 n.Chr., also etwa zur Zeit oder kurz vor Diophant. Sie sind allerdings besonders wichtig, weil sie uns Einblick in das damalige Rechnen geben, und weil in ihnen ein Zeichen für die Unbekannte vorkommt, das auch Diophant benutzt (s. S. 143).
