A chapter in Mathematical Physics X, 1992, pp 388-392 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In quantum field theory one has to deal with superselection sectors, i.e. inequivalent representations πα of the algebra of observables A. It is then desirable to have a unified description, i.e. a Hilbert space which is a direct sum of all sectors together with an algebra of charged fields interpolating among them, and a gauge principle, i.e. a transformation law for the fields to single out the observables as the gauge-invariant quantities.
