Chapter 2 in Karl Weierstraß (1815–1897), 2016, pp 53-121 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract From unpublished archival material the paper adds new facts concerning Weierstraß’ biography, e.g. related to Franz Weierstraß. In regard to this Weierstraß himself, his colleagues, students, and members of his family will be quoted. Some aspects of Weierstraß’ treatment of the foundations of analysis in his lectures will be discussed (notion of number, theorem of Bolzano-Weierstraß, mean value theorem of the differential calculus, notion of integral, role of geometry). As early as in his first lecture course of 1863/64 on the theory of analytic functions Weierstraß talked about the existence of continuous, nowhere differentiable functions. The same lectures contained beginnings of his later product theorem. The controversy with Kronecker will be discussed, and some details about Weierstraß’ attitude vis-à-vis Cantor and Riemann will be mentioned. Some hitherto neglected sources concerning Sofya Kovalevskaya, her relation to Weierstraß, her move to Berlin and her study at this place will be analyzed.
