Abstract: Abstract Starting from the well-known definition of management as profession of control (Beer 1966, p. 239) this article will reveal some gaps between the requirement to bring an organization and its environment under control and possibilities of achieving this aim. Subsequently, leadership will be defined as complement to management to close these gaps. The entire definition will be given constructively presenting single functions of both leadership and management.
