A chapter in New Work Hacks, 2021, pp 5-13 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract New Work is a liberal philosophical approach, which was founded by the social philosopher Frithjof Bergmann in the late 1970s. Based on the two assumptions, 1. that work can both take and give life (polarity of work) and 2. that people do not see any sense in their work (poverty of desire), he developed the approach to ask for the real will in the work (Bergmann, Neue Arbeit, Neue Kultur. Arbor, Freiburg i.Br, 2017). Today, New Work can be understood as changed ways of working in a technological, digital and global world of work, which aim at meaningful and fulfilling activities and put people at the centre. Precisely because our society is developing from an industrial to a knowledge society and is increasingly shaped by new values, more flexible work structures are becoming increasingly necessary. New Work wants to offer a movement and a basic framework to meet the challenges in the world of work and to accompany the profound changes in a humane way. Like every approach, New Work is based on certain basic assumptions, objectives and values that have been shaped and developed. New Work claims to be not only a theoretical construct, but to show practical applications that make the New Work possible.
