Abstract: Abstract The term “cryptocurrency” is widely used nowadays. Although there are many very different definitions people are often talking about cryptocurrencies without knowing that they use different definitions. There are not only homonyms, but also synonyms with often slightly different meanings. Misunderstandings are not only the result of using terms with different definitions, but also in the context of different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Depending on this, a term can be used or not. Independent of definitions of terms, there exist many approaches of digitalization of currencies and money to make payments faster and cheaper, and therefore more efficient and more effective. Research projects and pilot implementations lead to working systems and mean increasing knowledge and fundamentals for policy makers in central banks for continuous development of central bank issued money.
