Robotic Process Automation—Background and Introduction

Mario Richard Smeets (smeets@mario-smeets.de), Andreas Freßmann and Ralf Jürgen Ostendorf (ralf.ostendorf@hs-niederrhein.de)

Chapter Chapter 2 in Robotic Process Automation in Use, 2024, pp 3-29 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In the literature, there are various definitions of RPA. The most striking differences in the definitions lie in the demarcation from similar, self-learning technologies that use artificial intelligence. This is a source of frequent misunderstandings, which are also repeatedly found in practical discussions. Initially, a clear definition of RPA will be provided, based on Smeets et al. 2021a. Subsequently, a further distinction of RPA from other, similar technologies will take place.
