Abstract: Abstract To life insurance mathematics primarily two areas of mathematics are fundamental: the theory of compound interest and probability theory. This chapter gives an introduction to the first topic. The probabilistic model will be introduced in the next chapter; however, it is assumed that the reader is familiar with the basic principles of probability theory.
