Abstract:
Abstract There are at least three reasons for focussing attention on the particular class of random sets composed of the point processes. Firstly, despite the rudimentary character of their constitutive elements, point processes can exhibit rather complicated structures (cf. Figure 11.1) . Secondly, they can be used for modelling a wide range of natural phenomena (trees in a forest, precious stone deposits, earthquake epicentres, stars in galaxies, populations in settlements...). Thirdly, point processes can act as basic ingredients for designing more complicated models.
