Abstract: Zusammenfassung Thales von MiletThales von Milet (Θαλῆς ὁ Μιλήσιος) (640–546 v. Chr.) ist der erste namentlich bekannte Philosoph und Mathematiker (Abb. 3.1). Nach Diogenes LaertiosDiogenes Laertios [I, 22] ist er Kaufmann gewesen, so dass er auf seinen Handlungsreisen auch nach Ägypten kam, wo er bei den Priestern die ägyptische Mathematik kennen lernte (Abb. 3.2). Nach Plutarch übertraf er bald seine Lehrer und bestimmte zur Überraschung des Pharao Ahmose II (570–526 v. Chr.), griechisch Amasis,Amasis die Höhe der Pyramiden mithilfe eines Stabes durch einen Vergleich der Schattenlängen (Abb. 3.3).
