Coaching Expatriates Through Divorce

A chapter in Coaching im Rahmen der Auslandsentsendung, 2021, pp 229-252 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Going through a divorce might be even more challenging for expatriates than it is for non-expats, which makes coaching extremely valuable for them. Coaches who work with divorcing expats play three distinct roles: Trusted Advisor, providing practical advice for dealing with the legal, financial and logistical aspects of divorce, Secure Base, providing emotional support and comfort, and Committed Champion, providing encouragement, as clients navigate the challenging process and rebuild their lives. In all three roles, the coach works with the client as a whole person—with values, goals, and personal circumstances—in the midst of a transition that is in many ways analogous to that of cross-cultural adjustment. The coach adapts a mix of roles and manages tensions among them as the client progresses through the stages of the divorce transition.
