Abstract:
Abstract This chapter deals with the basic structures in which the international business activities of a company are embedded. International business is concerned with cross-border business activities and describes the process of internationalization of the business firm. The behavior of these international firms is embedded in a dynamically changing and co-evolving global economy, the macro environment, called the world economy. The world economy is a central contextual constraint for individual actors, but at the same time it is also the product of the behavior of these individual actors. Against this background, several main features of the world economy will be described in this section, such as the distribution and pattern of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP), the structure of global trade, and the pattern of foreign direct investment (FDI). These key features of the world economy are closely related to the scale and scope of multinational firms, which, as powerful and principal players, occupy a core role in the prevalent international division of labor and structure of global value chains, driving the dynamics of the global economy.
