The General Solution of the Balance and Boundary Conditions

Chapter 8 in Stresses in glaciers, 2022, pp 61-70 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The general solution of the balance and boundary conditions can be constructed as the sum of a special solution of the balance conditions and the general “weightless solution” of the balance and boundary conditions for “weightless stress tensor fields”. Thus, the general solution is known, since both special solutions of the balance conditions and the general “weightless solution” are known. If the boundary surface of known boundary stresses consists only of the simply connected free surface, which is usually the case for land glaciers, then the general solution can be obtained from three selected components of the stress tensor or the deviatoric stress tensor, which can be taken as arbitrary functions in the framework of the general solution.
