Abstract: Abstract The life data of Theon (Θέων ὁ Σμυρναῖος) are only approximately known. The Suda calls him Theon the philosopher. He comes from Smyrna, today’s Ismir (Turkey). K. Ptolemaios ascribes four Mercury- or Venus-observations to him in the Almagest in the years 127, 129, 130 and 132 during the reign of Emperor Trajan. He is also mentioned by name in the writings of Theon of Alexandria as the older Theon.
