Conflicts

Chapter Chapter 19 in Tools of Effective Compliance, 2023, pp 193-208 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Conflicts are part of everyday professional life. As long as there is scarcity, there will be conflicts, whether for financial success, the value in the company, the attention of the management and the allocation of resources, ultimately also with contacts who seek the conflict, for whatever reason. The necessary coordination of the various functions in the company also brings with it conflicts. The ability to resolve conflicts is not the domain of compliance. All too often and too quickly, the argumentation of Martin Luther in front of the Worms Reichstag of 1521 is followed loudly: “Here I stand, I can not do otherwise, God help me.” It is the laws that give primacy to politics over the economy, which leaves no room for compromise. Nevertheless, there is no real alternative to compromise. The brutal enforcement of one’s own ideas may succeed in individual cases, but it arouses a deeply seated, emotionally based aversion in the other person. The result is feelings of revenge, combined with the knowledge that one sees oneself twice in life. Whoever patiently waits will find and use the opportunity for revenge. That this situation should not arise does not require further explanation.
