Chapter 9 in Solving Complex Decision Problems, 2025, pp 79-94 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter explains the last step of the general heuristic problem-solving procedure, Step 7, “Overall evaluation of the options and decision”. First, it explains how irrelevant options can be eliminated. This leads to a simplification of the decision problem. Then, it is decided whether to proceed analytically or summarily with the overall evaluation. A more extended section then shows how, in the case of the analytical approach, the single consequences of the options can be summarized into their overall consequences. To this end, the most crucial decision maxims are introduced, and their application is explained using examples. This is followed by an explanation of how to determine the most important strengths and weaknesses of the options in the case of the summary approach. The chapter concludes with statements on making the decision.
