Karl Menger and Vienna’s Golden Autumn
Karl Sigmund
A chapter in Selecta Mathematica, 2002, pp 7-21 from Springer
Abstract:
Zusammenfassung Some Viennese hold that their hometown became the Capital of Music because there was so little else to do. Counterreformation, absolutism and, after the Napoleonic Wars, a half-century of political reaction weighed heavily on free enterprise, free trade, and free thought. An all-pervading censorship left no room for intellectual discussions: If you met friends, it had better be for a musical soirée.
