Topology in the Ergebnisse

Ryszard Engelking

A chapter in Karl Menger, 1998, pp 43-50 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The first volume of the Ergebnisse opens with three lectures on dimension theory, two of them by Karl Menger. Clearly Menger wanted his Colloquium to continue the study of the notion of dimension. This notion has been introduced independently by P. S. Urysohn in 1922 and by Menger in 1923 and they both built the framework of the dimension theory for compact metric spaces. Since Urysohn’s death in 1924, Menger was considered the foremost expert in the theory, and it was he who published the first monograph on the subject [M 1928].
