Abstract In order to do justice to the demands voiced by the exceptional German mathematician Alfred Clebsch, one will have to grasp the significance and the fate of Hermann Günther Graßmann’s mathematical oeuvre against the backdrop of the revolutionary changes that occurred in geometric ideas in the first half of the 19th century.
