Abstract:
Abstract Starting point of this contribution is lack of epistemological reflection of information systems research. It has become virulent since the discussion about behavioral science vs. design science, especially initiated by Hevner et al. (2004). Information systems research is characterized by subject and method. The basic disciplines economics and computer science and their specific subjects and methods are discussed. Some relevant epistemological aspects are pointed out. Information systems research is inquired in light of general characteristics, dimensions and requirements. One important requirement founding the commitment of science is retraceability. In the closing part of the contribution the topic concerning behavioral science vs. design science is characterized and its weight for development of information systems research is reassessed.
