Abstract: Abstract This chapter discusses human resource issues and expatriate staffing. Because a purely economic approach to M&A often fails to consider a key element—human resources, the people involved in the process. This chapter will focus on expatriates connected to Japan. It is also important to note that there are alternatives to sending expatriates to a foreign subsidiary; however, many firms still rely on expatriates despite the high costs. These expatriates are especially useful when it comes to communication with foreign-based offices. Because of this, Japanese firms rely more heavily on expatriates than e.g. foreign firms in Japan.
