A chapter in Driving the Economy through Innovation and Entrepreneurship, 2013, pp 703-715 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The petroleum industry carries immense importance in the Indian economy. The model of third party logistic company services has been for long used as a measure for improvement and cost saving along both the upstream and downstream petroleum supply chain. Companies in petroleum industry world overtook this outsourcing idea a step further to collaborate with competitors and found shared solutions to their supply chain challenges, commonly called as swap. The diversified outcome of refineries needs a special attention to its inventory handling. Swap practice coupled with application of IMS technology is an improved way of inventory handling. This chapter investigates this aspect of downstream petroleum inventory management on the basis of a survey of intermediaries of PSUs, namely, HPCL and BPCL in the state of Maharashtra.
