Chapter Chapter 7 in Strategic Business Decisions, 2014, pp 195-226 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract “Queuing” has become an integral part of life, be it service at a restaurant, issue of airline tickets or manufacturing processes at a plant. There can be more than one queue and more than one server in many cases. If the server is free at the time of arrival of the customer, he can be serviced immediately. If there are number of people, a waiting line and consequently waiting time come into operation. There can also be server idle time. In order to optimize the time and cost of service, scheduling becomes very important. In this chapter, we understand queuing models, their elements, types, and applications. We will also discuss various practical problems and their solutions.
