Abstract:
Abstract Technological advances such as, radio, television, cellular phones, computers and modems have brought major advances and changes to the family. The possibilities of widespread Internet use have also stimulated substantial developments in virtual families and communities. Technologies and practices do change behaviour. The study is limited to one local government in Delta State Nigeria. Stratified random sampling will be used to select 150 families from urban, semi-urban and rural communities. Three research questions will guide this study: To what extent has technology contributed to change in African concept of family and its functions? How does information technology influence our interpersonal family relationship and our ways of communicating? How does technology shape our identity, our daily life? The study made use of triangulation (multi-methods) to gather data through questionnaire, interview and personal observation. The findings show that traditional family structure and functions has not changed. Social policy implications were highlighted and recommendations proffered.
