Abstract: Abstract Upon the annexation of the Veneto to the Kingdom of Italy, the Italian Army’s Defence Commission immediately promoted studies to evaluate the new defensive requirements dictated by the changes in the geographic situation. The first studies of the Venetian fortifications, based in part on the experiences of 1848–49, revealed the weakness of the defensive system towards the mainland centred around Fort Marghera (Fig. 1).
