Abstract: Summary In Graphite/Epoxy composites delamination of the plies under compressive loading is a serious failure mode. When the delamination is near the surface the lay-up of the surface plies has a significant effect on delamination growth. Linear elastic fracture mechanics together with 3D FE modelling is used to evaluate the components of the energy release rate for specimens with artificially introduced delaminations. The results are compared with experimental observations.
