Abstract: Summary The evaluation of safety conditions of arch dams calls for the verification of the global rupture conditions of significant volumes of the structure, for scenarios of material strength decrease and/or actions increase. For the study of these scenarios the material non-linear behaviour must be considered. Shell models of arch dams developed with an elastoplastic behaviour of the concrete are presented in this paper. In the analysis of these models the finite element method is used with a stress-transfer technique to consider the material non-linear behaviour. Examples of the use of tthese models in the static and dynamic analysis of some arch dams are briefly presented and confronted with the results of three dimensional scaled models.
