Abstract:
Summary The conventional approach to selecting catalogue components (such as gears, bearings, springs, etc) tends to be an iterative or direct process when tackled manually. This usually involves making a subjective selection of an item at the design stage, then performing some analysis to confirm suitability in a given application. Computerising both the analysis and the selection procedure, it has been shown, can lead to significant benefits including a much improved choice of component if a range of solutions is generated. However, the formulation of the design problem may require that a radically different approach to the manual method be adopted and this necessitates using efficient computer codes. This paper describes some numerical techniques which have been used developing bearing and gear selection software for use by practising mechanical engineering designers. Of particular significance has been the speed of response of such routines and so efficiency of the numerical methods used has. been of vital importance.
