Type II Redux

Bret Tilson

A chapter in Semigroups and Their Applications, 1987, pp 201-205 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Recent work of Ash has shown that the collection of all finite monoids whose idempotents commute is the M-variety generated by finite inverse monoids. Extending Ash’s ideas, Birget, Margolis and Rhodes have shown that the collection of all finite monoids whose idempotents form a submonoid is the M-variety generated by finite orthodox monoids. These results are actually special cases of a more general conjecture, called the type II conjecture.
