Abstract:
Abstract Cluster analysis is a generic name for a large set of statistical methods that all aim at the detection of groups in a sample of objects, these groups usually being called clusters. Essential to cluster analysis is that, in contrast to discriminant analysis, a group structure need not be known a priori. This makes cluster analysis attractive as an exploratory tool. However, the naive user of cluster analysis (defined as someone who has some data and by running an available computer program hopes to find a group structure underlying his data) may well be compared with one who sets off for a foreign country hoping to find Fortune: without some idea about what type of fortune in which country our hero may well end up his life on a desert island or relapse in melancholy. Similarly, some reflection on the nature of cluster analysis may result in more fruitful application than can be expected from our naive user. We shall follow him first and try to learn from his experiences.
