On the Development of Matrix Nearrings and Related Nearrings Over the Past Decade

A chapter in Near-Rings and Near-Fields, 2001, pp 23-34 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Matrix nearrings (in their present form) originated at Stellenbosch in 1984. It is therefore appropriate to present a talk on this subject at this specific conference, and I thank the organizers for the opportunity to do so. In the talk I intend to highlight the origin (by APJ van der Walt and JDP Meldrum [17]), the development (by several people), and the possible future of these structures. Some attention will also be given to certain related structures which arose by using techniques similar to those employed in the definition of matrix nearrings.
