Chapter Chapter 26 in Where Mathematics, Computer Science, Linguistics and Biology Meet, 2001, pp 287-296 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The family of languages with addition or union and catenation as operations is a semiring with a partial order making it a semireticulated semigroup or gerbier. Furthermore, the operation of insertion of languages has properties similar to those related to the derivation of sum and product of functions. This suggests considering semirings and in particular gerbiers having some kind of abstract derivation. The investigation of these algebraic structures called differential semirings and gerbiers is the object of this paper.
