Abstract:
Abstract We comprehensively review previous studies examining the effects of innovation and globalization on productivity. Innovation is measured by the R&D investment, patents, and novel business models and production practices. Globalization takes forms of the international trade in goods and services and foreign direct investment (FDI). In our review, we first present various mechanisms of how a form of innovation or globalization theoretically affects productivity, and then evaluate different model settings. Meanwhile, we summarize the empirical evidence, from both macro and micro analyses, such as the heterogeneous effects on productivity across different sectors and economic regions. Lastly, we discuss the related measurement, data source, identification, and modeling issues.
