Chapter Chapter 10 in Statistics and Research Methods in Psychology with Excel, 2019, pp 365-438 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Statistical inference is the backbone of statistics and has two dimensions: theory of estimation and testing of hypothesis. In this chapter, the point estimation and interval estimation have been discussed by means of different examples. In testing of hypothesis, different types of statistical tests like t, F, z and χ2 have been discussed for testing population mean, proportion, and variance. In hypothesis testing, one may commit two types of statistical errors, namely type I and type II. Since power is one minus type II error, by reducing type I error, the power of the test also gets reduced; hence, a judicious decision is taken to fix the two types of errors in the experiment. If one wishes to reduce both the errors simultaneously, then sample size needs to be increased. After going through this chapter, the readers can decide as to what should be the sample size which depends upon the values of α, β, effect size and population variability and type of test (one- or two-tailed test).
