Chapter Chapter 14 in Statistics and Research Methods in Psychology with Excel, 2019, pp 567-588 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Factor analysis is a multivariate statistical technique for data reduction. It has many applications in psychology. In this technique, several variables are reduced to few latent variables for explaining group characteristics. Factor analysis technique is used for both explorative and confirmative studies. In explorative studies, a model is developed to study the group behaviour on the basis of few latent variables. On the other hand, in confirmative studies, existing model is tested for its applicability in different population. Often, there is a confusion in principal component analysis and factor analysis. In principal component analysis, data reduction is done by forming components using linear combination of variables, whereas in factor analysis, factors are formed through the relationships it causes in a set of independent variables. In this chapter, details of factor analysis and the procedure involved in it have been discussed in detail by using a solved example.
