Chapter Chapter 5 in Statistics and Research Methods in Psychology with Excel, 2019, pp 161-199 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of using statistics is to make some probabilistic inference about the population characteristics from the sample data. It is therefore important for the students to understand the concept of probability. This chapter discusses the classical and axiomatic approaches of determining probability of events in different situations. It has been shown as to how axiomatic approach is used in solving probability when the classical approach fails. By going through the chapter, the readers can understand the concept of set theory used in determining probability. Addition and multiplication theorems of probability have been discussed with several solved examples. Towards the end of the chapter, a brief description about the Bayes’ theorem and its application have been discussed with example.
