Chapter 7 in Moving from the Millennium to the Sustainable Development Goals, 2020, pp 119-153 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter, Broermann contributes towards our understanding of factors that influence the achievement of the target of sustained economic growth related to goal 8 of the sustainable development goals. Broermann explores the relevance of a demand-led, export driven growth model for long run economic growth and tests this in the sub-Saharan African region using an augmented balance of payments constrained growth model. The results, which cover the last six decades, provide strong evidence that sub-Saharan Africa was balance of payments constrained. Broermann discusses important policy implications, which should be considered if the sustainable development goals are to be achieved.
