Chapter 36 in Building Sustainable Communities, 2020, pp 781-801 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Bangladesh is the third largest Muslim country with a population of 170 million. Bangladesh sends a large number of pilgrims every year for pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. A lot of issues and challenges are encountered by pilgrims. These include increasing restrictions to assure the security executed by the Saudi administration on pilgrimage visas and travel, police clearance certificate for pilgrims less than 50 years of age, illegal human trafficking, government monopoly of pilgrimage airfare, excessive pilgrimage fees, accommodation, transport, unscrupulous pilgrimage operators and lack of proper management and flight delay, all of these have shattered the dreams of many aspiring pilgrims. The objective of this chapter is to discuss the issues and challenges experienced by Bangladeshi pilgrims that have some implications on the human rights and religious freedom. It also aims to recommend solutions for addressing the existing problems in pilgrimage and umrah management.
