Chapter Chapter 3 in Contouring Human Development, 2020, pp 65-90 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Dealing with the methods of mapping the human development parameters and demonstrating the applications of the measures require an area of application to test the methods. The age-old human settlement of Purulia amidst the verdant hills, typical forms of lateritic landscapes, dense forests, and the gullies witness the cultural ethos, admixing different social and economic classes imbricate the mosaic of human development. The district speculates the broad spectrum of different parameters of human development with the distinct presence of the gradients of income, education, and health that have ascribed the district as a living laboratory for the human development researchers. This chapter will highlight the administrative setup, physical and socio-economic landscape of the district to acquaint the readers with the study area.
