Abstract: Abstract China’s emergence as economic powerhouse is often seen as forerunner of a new era in world affairs with an obvious impact on global economic activities. The rise of China’s influence in Africa raises question of what impact it has upon patterns of development, democratic transformation across the continent. There is mounting concern in whether China represents role model for development or acts as preservative for authoritarian rule in Africa. The chapter evolutes the narrative of China’s economic growth and its foreign policy in approaching Africa. In this context, the relationship between China and states in Africa appears to reveal the practice of ‘Beijing Consensus’ as new model replacing ‘Washington consensus’: China needs natural resources and new markets for its products, and Africa needs alternative financial sources, creditlines and loans to develop its infrastructure; hoping to develop like the rest of world. The chapter argues that the failure of ‘neoliberal polices’ has left vacuum which then contributed to the rise of China in Africa, presuming an important role as a new player in the continent.
